Kirk Kelley, PhD

Kirk B. Kelley, Ph.D. is a professor of Biology in the College of Arts and Sciences. With a PhD in Anatomy from University of Kansas Medical Center, Kelley has research interests in how the cardiovascular system adapts to high altitudes, and the convergence between the biology and culture of the French Alps. Kelley teaches courses in human anatomy and physiology as well as a course on the biology and culture of the French Alps. He also directs the department's program in cadaver dissection.

Courses Taught

Human Anatomy and Physiology I
- Systems-based introduction to the structure and function of the human body including the study of cell structure and organization, histology, the digestive system, metabolism, the skeletal system (including joints), muscle tissue and the muscular system, neural tissue, the spinal cord, and spinal nerves. Students are trained in critical thinking and application through the use of clinical case studies. The course comprises the first semester of a year-long sequence, including BIOL 232, and is intended to fulfill prerequisites for graduate programs such as Occupational and Physical Therapy or Physician Assistant. Lecture and laboratory. Laboratory includes cat dissection and hands-on work with prosected cadavers. *An additional course fee will be charged.
Human Anatomy and Physiology II
- Systems-based introduction to the structure and function of the human body including the study of the brain and cranial nerves, the autonomic nervous system, the endocrine system, the reproductive system, the cardiovascular system, the lymphatic system and immunity, the respiratory system, and the urinary system. Students are further trained in critical thinking and application through the use of clinical case studies. The course comprises the second semester of a year-long sequence, including BIOL 230, and is intended to fulfill prerequisites for graduate programs such as Occupational and Physical Therapy or Physician Assistant. Lecture and laboratory. Laboratory includes hands-on work with prosected cadavers. *An additional course fee will be charged.
Cadaver Dissection Lab
- A laboratory using a regional approach to anatomy utilizing human anatomical specimens (cadavers). Students gain knowledge of human anatomy and dissection experience. Enrollment is determined on a competitive basis. Applications are available from the instructor and on the Biology web page and are due March 1 each year. Pass/No Pass course.
Special Topics in Advanced Human Anatomy
- Investigation of selected biology sub-disciplines not treated in the department's regular offerings.
Biological Research
- Investigation of a specific research problem in the biological sciences.
Essentials of Anatomy & Physiology
- This course is a one-semester essentials course that provides a systems-based introduction to the human body. Students will gain an overview of homeostatic processes and an overview of the structure and function of most organ systems. An emphasis will be placed on the musculoskeletal, cardiorespiratory, and nervous systems. This course is intended for those majors that do not require a two-semester Anatomy and Physiology course. Laboratory includes hands-on work with prosecuted cadavers. *An additional course fee will be charged.
